From time to time, BMCC organises supervised road rides for junior club members. Generally these have been 16 – 18 mile rides, avoiding main roads as much as possible, with a café stop around half way; but we hope to provide also some longer rides for the older / stronger / more experienced junior members.
BMCC road rides for junior members are led by an experienced senior club member. Another adult, usually one of the parents, is designated to ride at the rear of the group to ensure that no rider is left behind. Routes are selected to maximise safety and to ensure that young riders can enjoy the experience, and road rides will not go ahead if weather conditions present significant risks.
Junior road rides are open to club members age 9+ who have attained a Level 2 Cycling Road Safety / Bikeability certificate and who have some experience already of riding on the road. At intervals the club provides Level 2 cycling road safety training (for children age 9 and over), authorised by Oxfordshire County Council.
These are not coaching sessions, and each child or young person must be accompanied by a parent or carer. The club strongly recommends that junior riders have British Cycling membership (which is free in the first year!) because of the insurance cover and access to advice which this offers.
